Italy Week Two: Sorrento, Pompeii, Capri, Rome

Italy Travel Diary, Part 2: Sorrento, Pompeii, Capri & Rome

May 25 – June 2

The second leg of our Italy trip took us from the Amalfi Coast into the heart of Rome. From lemon groves in Sorrento to the ruins of Pompeii, the sparkling waters of Capri, and the history-packed streets of the Eternal City, this week was filled with unforgettable sights, food, and memories.

Here’s a look at where we stayed, what we did, and the moments that stood out most.

Where We Stayed

Sorrento – Airbnb
Our home base on the Amalfi Coast was perfectly perched with views of the sea and surrounded by citrus trees. It felt tucked away but close enough for easy day trips. This spot was the dreamiest place to unwind after exploring and the perfect launch point for a boat ride to Capri. The photos below show the gorgeous interior of this stay!

Rome – Airbnb
We wrapped up this stretch of the trip in Rome, staying in a small apartment that I actually would not recommend, but we didn’t stay in there long, so no biggie. We didn’t read the reviews about this stay beforehand which was our own fault.

What We Did

Day Trip to Pompeii

Spending a day at Pompeii was surreal. The city of Pompeii was destroyed and buried in 79 AD by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which can be seen from a distance in my photo below. Walking through the preserved ruins, seeing the ancient streets and homes, and imagining life there centuries ago made history feel so real. If you’re even remotely interested in history, this is a must.

Boat Day to Capri

One of the highlights of the trip! We took a boat over to Capri, explored the island’s winding streets, and rode the chairlift to the very top for breathtaking views. The Blue Grotto, beach clubs, and just wandering through the boutiques and cafés made the whole day feel like a dream.

Exploring Sorrento

Sorrento felt so cozy and welcoming. We strolled lemon-lined streets, sampled limoncello, and ate some of the freshest seafood pasta of the trip. The whole town had a laid-back charm that made it easy to fall in love with.

Rome Highlights

Rome was an adventure all on its own. Every corner seemed to hold another piece of history or the perfect little café. Some of our favorite moments:

  • Tossing a coin in the Trevi Fountain

  • Walking through the Colosseum and Basilica

  • Admiring the art and architecture of the Vatican

  • Eating our weight in carbonara, cacio e pepe, and gelato

  • Late-night strolls on cobblestone streets lit by café lights
